Buying Old Fashioned

Buying Old Fashioned

We’re buying old fashioned things again!

In the supermarket

Before the lockdown the growth areas in grocery sales were in niche and premium products, with foreign and foreign inspired foods on the up.

Many more established foods and brands were in a gradual decline.

Since the coronavirus shopping spree started it’s been a different picture. Supermarkets have reported increased sales for familiar and trusted brands (for example Cadbury’s and Oxo) and products that are basically old fashioned!

Sales of instant (powdered) milk have risen dramatically, as well as tinned meat, instant mashed potato, suet, baked beans, tinned tomatoes, stock cubes and tinned rice pudding. Others on the rise are cake mixes and flour as bake it yourself replaces convenience, at least some of the time.

Supermarkets have been increasing their range of bakery products in recent years. Now the demand is for the familiar manufactured loaf, such as Hovis or Warburtons.

Alcohol sales have also increased sharply.

Games and leisure

Jigsaws, first seen in the shops in the 1760’s have also seen increased sales. The highest rise has been in the larger (for example 1000 piece) jigsaws, and jgsaws suitable for the whole family to enjoy.

Sales of board games were already increasing before the lockdown, although the old “roll and move” dice based games are being replaced by more modern games. Now board game sales are 240% higher than the same period last year.
