Online during Coronavirus
Shops may be closed, but in many areas online sales are soaring. An example is The Works which has experienced a rise in online sales of schooling materials and products to combat boredom, including jigsaws and art materials as well as books.
Some companies have been forced to temporarily suspend their websites to give them time to fulfill orders. Cadbury Gifts and Green & Black’s are both back online after a period of suspension, although some products are not available and it may not load first time. Press the back button and try again – it usually works second time. People are wanting to send treats and gifts to isolated friends and relatives. Both have daily limits on sales, so are paused again from time to time (see the bottom right of this page which is updated at least daily). After struggling to fulfill orders, many online suppliers are now back to normal, or near normal.
The electrical, gardening and wine sectors have seen increases in online sales as a result of the coronavirus pandemic while clothing sales have fallen sharply. Lord Wolfson, CEO of Next stated “people do not buy a new outfit to stay at home”.Next are among a number of suppliers to close their online sales operation citing the welfare of workers and difficulties of maintaining safe distances in their warehouses and depots. We feel that declining sales may also have been a factor.
Other non essentials, such as jewellery are also experiencing reductions in orders.
Major supermarkets are struggling to fulfill online orders. Others including TheVeganKind supermarket are now operating again after taking their website offline from time to time.
